District nurse Corrine Turrell has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Corrine works for Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust as a district nurse and began her nursing career almost 30 years ago. She’s been in her current night-shift role for almost 14 years and covers the whole of Liverpool and Sefton between the hours of 5.00pm and 8.00am.
“It can be a very challenging but rewarding role,” explains Corrine, “we respond to both planned and un-planned calls overnight, this includes many palliative and end of life patients. I feel privileged to be involved with patients and families in such circumstances.
“I am very proud to be part of an excellent team of nurses, particularly in these very difficult times when all NHS staff are facing new challenges.”
Nurse and colleague Gail McCrossan Hankin explains why Corrine was a worthy winner,
“Corrine is an amazing nurse who constantly gives her upmost to ensure the best care for all our patients. At the beginning of this pandemic, Corrine lost her beautiful mum to Covid-19, which was without a doubt the most painful experience of her life. She came back to work with such strength and compassion.
“Corrine came back with the intention of making her mum proud, which she has achieved a thousand times over. She has been caring for palliative patients with such grace and determination. To be able to come back into work after such heartbreak is one thing, but to come back during these difficult circumstances and give such amazing care is another. She never hides from difficult situations and she always ensures that patient care comes first. She is a highly respected part of our team and is loved by staff and patients alike. She goes above and beyond to always give her absolute best and thoroughly has my upmost respect. She is the nurse that I aspire to be, this award would mean the world to her.”
Corrine reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,
“I had the pleasure of receiving my fabulous and totally unexpected award some weeks ago. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the Cavell Star Awards and also to thank Gail and all the team for their support. I will treasure my medal and wear my little pin badge with pride to represent the hard work of the whole out-of-hours district nursing team.”
