Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists Katie Williams and Gemma Irvine have won Cavell Star Awards for going above and beyond for their patients and colleagues.
Their colleague and Joint Day Therapy Lead Emma Hartley explains with her team mates are deserving award winners,
“Katie really has gone above and beyond for the Day Therapy Team. Despite always being incredibly busy, she ALWAYS makes herself available to other staff members and checks in with everyone. She is incredibly approachable, and you can’t help but open up and chat to her. Katie is very mindful of her colleague’s well-being and recently found a short video clip which we played at a team meeting, helping staff to identify Mental Burn-Out. Many staff fed back to myself, how useful they found this video, and it’s made them more self aware which is incredibly valuable.
“Gemma is very approachable and caring, and patients cannot help but open up to her for support. She is easily able to build up a rapport, and advocate any way possible to try and ensure their care needs are met. She is able to support many complex patients with high nursing needs for symptom management and future care planning, as well as ensuring they have fun whilst they attend their Day Therapy Program. This is particularly impressive when many patients may struggle to communicate verbally- ensuring they are all integrated into the group and are heard.”
