Community Nursery Nurse Micki Short from Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Specialist Health Visitor Rebecca Humphreys explains why Micki is such a deserving winner,
“Micki was asked to be part of a team looking after asylum seeking families in a hotel in Newcastle. Micki has been involved from the very beginning and I can honestly say this hotel would not run as smoothly as it does without Micki. Her care, compassion and support to each and every family that lives in the hotel is without doubt exemplary.
“Micki recognises the huge emotional needs for the parents and the children staying in the hotel and a prime example is when she met a pregnant couple and due to the trauma of getting to the UK Mum was unable to recognise that she was pregnant.
“Micki saw this couple every week and encouraged the mother to touch her bump, talk and sing to her unborn baby. Micki also supported the baby’s father to do this too. This resulted in this Mum being able to bond with her baby prior to delivery and also when baby was born the emotional attachment was evident from birth. This very small act of kindness and professionalism from Micki has changed that baby’s life giving the baby the best start in life.
“Micki is so dedicated to the families that if a family arrives and they require anything that is unavailable for them then she will source this herself and the family will receive their request the following week.”
