Paediatric staff nurse Debra Sainsbury from Westgate House Children’s Centre at Southmead Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Ward Sister Katy Travis explains why Debra is such a worth winner,
“Debra has worked in the NHS for 40 years, she is a passionate, caring a compassionate nurse who goes above and beyond everyday. During the pandemic when a lot of Paediatric services were postponed, Debra continued to offer holistic family centred care to some very vulnerable families.
“She regularly allows families to come in for blood tests when it suits them, to allow easy access and family centred care, even if this means making her workload bigger or putting time constraints on her own time , in her lunch break.
“Debra is a delight to be around and all the children and families love seeing her, especially our regular patients who may have known her for years. She loves to teach students and pass on her wisdom and experience. She is a credit to the NHS and our Paediatric outpatient department.”
Debra reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,
“I was so shocked and surprised to be given the award. Being recognised for patient care was just everything! It was so lovely to hear that my colleagues appreciate me so much and that they saw that I really do my best for our small patients. We are such a wonderful team.
“My nursing team means everything to me, they are my friends. We are always there for each other. I truly believe a happy team projects love and care on to our patients.”
