Clair Bexhall and Laurien Brown, both nurses from St Michael’s Hospice Hastings and Rother, have won Cavell Star Awards for going above and beyond for their patients.
Clinical Services Director Evelyn Prodger explains why they are both worthy of their awards.
“Clair has taken clear ownership of medicines management as an area of practice and was instrumental in designing our new clinical room. She helped create an environment that is calm and comfortable for staff to work in but which also promotes patient safety. While lots of this work goes on in the background, Clair’s underlying driving force is patient safety and the provision of high quality patient care. Clair does this in a quiet and unassuming way but we want her contribution to be recognised. Our patients are safer because of the work she does.”
“Laurie identifies areas of clinical practice where change is required, researches best evidence based practice and drives change. She is well respected by team members and will always go the extra mile to support colleagues to learn, grow and develop as well as solve problems. She teaches on Clinical Skills days and always relates learning pack to patient centred safe care. Laurie is always reluctant to step into the limelight, preferring to praise colleagues, but the work she does directly improves patient safety and the quality of care they receive.”
Clair and Laurien reacted to winning their Cavell star Awards.
Clair said “I was very shocked to received the award, but it fills me with pride and it is an amazing achievement. My nursing team means everything to me, we are very supportive to each other in an emotional job.”
Laurien reacted “I work with a fantastic group of people and feel very humbled and privileged to have received a Cavell Star Award. The nursing team are crucial to my role, their feedback is essential to me especially in relation to audits as I get relevant and reliable evidence. They are a committed professional group of people who are a joy to work with.”
