Specialist Nurse for Discharge Ruth Green from Glenfield Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Head of Nursing Sue Mason explains why Ruth is such a worthy winner.
“Ruth consistently goes above and beyond to support patients and their relatives. Her role involves planning and implementing support for patients on discharge, often in circumstances where a patient is coming towards the end of their life and wishes to return home. Ruth will hold compassionate, empathetic and sensitive conversations with patients concerning their wishes. She will support family and loved ones in the most emotional circumstances, giving them her time and care. She has on several occasions stayed beyond her hours or at weekends supported ward teams in ensuring the discharge arrangements go as she had planned. Ruth places the patient at the center of all she does, acting as an advocate. I genuinely believe that Ruth deserves this award in recognition of her kindness, professionalism and patient centered approach in all she does in her role.”
Ruth reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“I was not expecting it at all, it was a big shock! I feel privileged to work for the NHS and alongside some very inspirational colleagues. I feel lucky every single day to be able to be a part of people’s lives in their most vulnerable and anxious times, it is a privilege to be able to give people their final wishes for their preferred place of death and follow them through this very tough journey. I feel lucky to be a nurse.”
