Celebrating Fernando

Clinical Nurse Specialist Fernando Ferreira da Silva, a Clinical Nurse Specialist working at Royal Brompton Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for his colleagues.

Nurse Consultant and colleague Felicia Cox explains why Fernando is such a deserving winner,

“Improving safety and the care of patients receiving epidural analgesia are two areas of national interest. Fernando lead on the development of an interactive e-learning module and supervised a pre-med student from Boston University who was contributing to this complex project. This project has been published and the e-learning module is of interest to other hospitals.

“Fernando also volunteered to lead on a complex update of a system of syringes, needles, administration sets and infusion bags for epidurals/spinals/regional anaesthesia. Fernando project managed this, leading a team of procurement staff, clinical engineers, operating room department personnel and anaesthetists. The transition was managed at a single hospital site on a single day and involved significant numbers of staff identifying, removing from stock and replacing with new equipment.

“Both projects promote patient safety and are worthy of recognition for their complexity and for Fernando’s leadership.”

Fernando reacted to be recognised for his fantastic project work with a Cavell Star Award.

“Receiving the Cavell Star Award has left me over the moon! It’s an incredible honour, and awards like this are so important. They remind us how much our work matters. Knowing my efforts are appreciated by my colleagues is both humbling and inspiring.
