Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Claire Gilfillan from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients’ families.
Colleague and Lead Nurse Rachel James explains why Claire is such a worthy winner.
“Claire is a true ambassador for patients admitted with acute oncological emergencies. These admissions are often sudden and overwhelming, leaving families unprepared for the impact on their lives. Claire recognises the distress and uncertainty this creates and works tirelessly to provide not only expert care for her patients but also comfort, guidance, and support for their loved ones.
“One poignant example of her commitment came when she was caring for a young patient with children. After the patient sadly and unexpectedly passed away, the children were left without immediate access to food or support. Claire recognised their vulnerability and acted swiftly with extraordinary compassion. She ensured they were safe, had the essentials they needed, and were connected with the right services to provide long-term support.
“Claire went far beyond the responsibilities of her role. She would not allow herself to eat her own evening meal until she was certain the children’s cupboards were stocked. At a time of unimaginable loss, her only concern was the children’s wellbeing and security.
“This act of kindness and humanity exemplifies Claire’s character and her unwavering dedication to those in her care. She embodies the very best of nursing—compassion, integrity, and a deep commitment to people at their most vulnerable moments.”
Claire reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“I was very taken back that my lead nurse would nominate me for such an award, but also very proud that it was for going above and beyond for my patients’ families. I don’t feel that I do anything that anyone else wouldn’t do, we do the job we do to make a difference and I wouldn’t go home at night to my family if I didn’t do all I could to make this process better for the patients.
“My nursing team has been through challenges over the years, but as I look around the future looks bright for us as a team, being lead by a nurse that truly understands our role, and team members that want to make a difference to the service and patients. So exciting to be part of this team with the ongoing service developments and the improvement we can make, for the patients needing us.”
