Sister Margaret-Mary ‘Marge’ Taylor from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Lead Nurse – Professional Standards Karen Hill tells us why Marge is such a worthy winner. A senior colleague of Karen’s relayed to her the story of how Sister Marge Taylor cared for his father.
“Sister Taylor really touched my Dad and made a difference to him, me and the rest of my family during his care in the Combined Day Unit. Sister Taylor provided Dad with detail, which he said ‘was just right.’ Often patients and relatives can be overwhelmed with information, and it can be difficult to process. By getting it ‘just right,’ Dad felt in control, feeling listened to and properly informed, something exceptionally important to him.
“I am reassured to see such great examples of care delivery being provided. I feel it is important to celebrate exceptional nursing care. Sister Taylor’s behaviours and care made a difference. This was a single act of kindness to patient on a particular day, but these examples and the ongoing skill and care makes a huge difference to how people experience care at their most vulnerable times. This may appear to be what the job is about, but even a little extra time, compassion and empathy leaves a profound impact on our patients. As someone who works in the Trust I am heartened to see great care delivered in the best possible way.”
Marge reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“I still can’t believe I have won the award! I try every day to go above and beyond for my patients, even the little things can make someone smile and to be recognised for just being me is an honour. I’m not often at a loss for words, but when I was presented with this award, I was!
“My nursing team are my family, and I would do anything for them. They make me proud every day with the care and compassion they give our patients. Our unit is filled with love and kindness, not just to the patients but to each other. Some days are hard, physically, mentally and emotionally, but we are always there for each other, providing a shoulder to cry on or a simple squeeze of the shoulder. And we love to laugh, mostly at each other! They really are the best team in the hospital.”
