Anne Byrne, Specialist Safeguarding Children Advisor and nurse from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Head of Safeguarding – Named Nurse Safeguarding Children, Christina Kelly explained why Anne is such a worthy winner.
“In her role, Anne advocates for children and young people to ensure there attendance and admission to hospital is safe and supportive. Anne has developed a robust ‘Was Not Brought’ process, to ensure vulnerable children and young people are brought to their appointments. In the event that there is a concern of medical neglect, she will liaise and refer to the local authority, but will also escalate, demonstrating professional curiosity in her work.
“In many safeguarding practice reviews a criticism is the failure to escalate, lack of professional curiosity and no evidence of the voice of the child or their lived experience. Anne demonstrates in her practice that she has healthy scepticism and advocates for the child and escalates when needed.”
Anne reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“It honestly feels very humbling. I never come to work expecting recognition, I just try to do my best for my patients every day. It made me feel really appreciated and reminded me why I love nursing.
“Thank you to my colleagues, my manager Christina Kelly, and the wider team for their support and kindness, and for taking the time to recognise my work.
“I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a compassionate nursing community. My team at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital means everything. We support each other through the challenging moments, celebrate the good ones, and genuinely look out for one another. I couldn’t do this job without them, and I feel very lucky to work alongside such a caring and dedicated group of people.”
