A nursing team at the Royal London Children’s Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for their colleagues.
Eight exceptional Band 6 Children’s Nurses from the Royal London Children’s Hospital have been awarded the Cavell Star Award, presented by Tris Kerr, Director of Nursing, in recognition of their outstanding dedication, leadership and commitment to children, young people and families across North East London.
The Cavell Star recognises nurses and midwives who go above and beyond their professional roles, embodying the values and legacy of Edith Cavell through compassion, teamwork and excellence in care. This remarkable group of nurses have consistently demonstrated these qualities through their participation in the Children’s Band 6 Development Programme, which builds on the award-winning Barts Health Children’s Preceptorship Programme.
The programme provides opportunities for reflection, professional development and cross-specialty learning, including experience in areas such as Accident & Emergency and Paediatric Critical Care. Alongside clinical development, the programme also includes psychological support and art therapy, supporting staff wellbeing as well as patient care.
Each nurse has been recognised for their unique and invaluable contribution:
Kaman Choi – An outstanding advocate for patients and colleagues, with a particular passion for breastfeeding and infant feeding, ensuring the best possible start for the hospital’s youngest patients.
Chanelle Whitney – Widely praised for her professionalism and reliability, always willing to stay and support colleagues when pressures are high.
Aisha Bari – A visible and respected leader in the Paediatric Day Care Unit, known for her clear communication and commitment to delivering high-quality medical care for children.
Grace Sarpong – Renowned for her calm and reassuring presence, particularly in the care of children with tracheostomies, creating a focused and supportive ward environment.
Nana Boateng – A quietly effective leader with strong organisational skills, ensuring teams are well supported and staff wellbeing is prioritised during busy shifts.
Sian Williams – Valued for her openness, humility and expert surgical assessment skills, fostering a culture of shared learning and collaboration.
Jasmin Muuse – A steady and compassionate team member who promotes work-life balance and inclusivity, organising celebrations and supporting team morale.
Momotaz Begum – Known for her approachability and empathy, offering encouragement and support to colleagues navigating challenging situations.
Together, these eight nurses exemplify excellence in children’s nursing through their leadership, role modelling and unwavering commitment to patient-centred care. Their work continues to make a meaningful difference to children and families across North East London.
Speaking at the presentation, Tris Kerr, Director of Nursing, praised the team’s impact, noting that they represent the very best of nursing practice and are a powerful example of how compassionate leadership transforms both patient and staff experience.
