Celebrating Alison

Nurse Alison Newnham from the Hickstead Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Sussex has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her colleagues.

Colleague and nurse Mikala Bryant explains why Alison is such a worthy winner,

“Alison has been particularly extra supportive and helpful whilst I settle in to my new role. She has supported me every shift even when she has had her own list and wasn’t the nurse in charge that day. Alison has given and shown me where to access information, where to find things around the unit and also been happy to check my work before I send the patients home just in case I have missed something.

“She has sat with me to go through paper work even when she has her own to do and as a result has left work late because of helping me. She is a real asset to the team, and has extensive knowledge and interest of the area we work in.”

Alison reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,

“I felt so proud because these are the people you work with day in day out, so to be recognised by one of them meant a lot. Every staff member deserves the best start they can be given when they come into new area and the fact that my colleague felt I did this for her made me very proud.

“My nursing team is a representation of strength and compassion. They make every effort to make a patient’s journey through pre-op to surgery as smooth as possible despite the challenges that they can face. They are always available to offer advice and to share knowledge based on their own experience.”
