The Blackburn East District Nursing Team has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for their patients.
Kathryn Woods, Head of Nursing and Professional Practice at Lancashire and South Cumbria Foundation Trust explains why Team Manager Laura Milner and her colleagues are such worthy winners of the award,
“Laura is an inspiring team leader whose energy, passion and dedication to excellent patient care shines through. Guided by Laura’s leadership the team recent cared for a young patient at end of life whose care needs deteriorated rapidly. Emotionally this was difficult for the staff but through their commitment to deliver compassionate care they were able to support not only the patient but his family during a very difficult time, they felt they wanted to do something special for him.
“Laura felt it was important to recognise his bravery in dealing with his diagnosis by arranging a special message from his beloved Liverpool Football club. Laura went about arranging this and when they shared the video message with him it made his day! He felt the footballers past and present knew him and the journey that he had been on. The patient has since passed away but the memory of a happy time remains with his family and with the team who felt that they made a special memory just for him.”
Laura reacted on behalf of the team to winning the award,
“We are very humbled as a team to have been recognised and nominated for a Cavell Star Award. We are very proud of individualised end of life care that we provide in BWD. As a team we are very proud to accept and share this award. The east District Nursing team are more like a family to me, they make me proud daily of the excellent compassionate person centred care that they provide.”
