Celebrating Cathy

Cathy McArevey, an Adult Nurse and Public Health Nurse from Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her colleagues.

Colleague and Specialist Safeguarding Practitioner Therese Drummond explains why Cathy is such a deserving winner,

“I have always been inspired by Cathy’s dedication and commitment to the nursing profession. Cathy has accomplished many things and achieved so much within her nursing career, including the development of a tool to help staff identify child neglect at an early stage, known as the MAC Tool, and she has published articles to share her fountain of knowledge for the benefit of others.

“Most importantly is the standard of care that Cathy provides to her patients. As well as good clinical care, Cathy is highly skilled at reassuring patients and their families and carers. When in the homes of elderly people she will remind them of the importance of nutrition, hydration and exercise and not just focus on the task that she is there to do. Cathy will always go above and beyond and it truly does not make any difference who you are.

“Cathy is very kind, compassionate, empathetic and has all the attributes of an excellent nurse. The world of nursing is very fortunate to have someone like Cathy who represents nursing in such a positive way.”

Cathy reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,

“I feel so humbled that my colleagues feel I am worthy of winning an award! I cannot thank them enough for everything they do every day to make life better for patients. My colleagues are who make coming to work a pleasure.

“My nursing team are so valuable in so many ways. Each nurse I have worked with brings different skills and perspectives to situations. We laugh together, cry together and share the highs and lows of the profession.

“I have always felt so proud to be a nurse and my love of nursing grows every single day. I love that I get to make a difference, sometimes small, sometimes big but always a difference.”
