Trainee Nursing Associate Emily Loftus from Leicester General Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Ward Sister Amanda Flint explains why Emily is such a worthy winner,
“Emily always puts her patients first and she provides the best care possible and will keep the ward entertained throughout her shift with her bubbly caring and ever so slightly loud personality. She develops effective caring relationships with all of her clients, will think about each patient’s individual needs and ensure they are met. Emily will often think of ideas to improve patient experience.
“On the build up to the Kings Coronation, she organised, bought decorations and decorated the ward with banners and balloons. She made and gave each patient with a flag to make them feel part of the experience. Although we did not have enough TV’s for every patient to watch the coronation, Emily improvised by using laptops and iPads to show the coronation to the patients so they did not have to miss out whilst they were in hospital.
“Following on from this event Emily then realised that we could do with more radios and or a TV to improve the patient experience. She organised a bake sale on the ward to celebrate the NHS 75th Birthday and she got all the staff involved in baking and bringing in cakes to sell. The money raised will go towards radios and TVs for the ward to give the patients something to listen/watch on. Emily is a positive role model for all staff with her caring and nurturing attitude.”
Emily reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,
“I feel very honoured and was very very surprised! To me, I am just doing my job. I treat the patients I work with like I would want my family to be treated if they were in hospital.
“The nursing team I work alongside are amazing! The whole team are hardworking and so supportive. Throughout my training they have been rooting for me all the way! My colleagues are always ready to support me and make me a better nurse.”
