Helen Turner, a Digital Nurse from University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her colleagues.
Chief Nursing Information Officer Louise Downey explained why Helen deserved her recognition.
“Helen has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership as a digital nurse during a critical period for our acute Trust. While the organisation was operating under a business continuity plan, Helen’s commitment to team work and patient safety made a significant impact during a challenging time.
“Helen not only offered practical support with digital systems but also lent a compassionate ear to colleagues. Her empathetic and calm demeanour reassured those who were feeling overwhelmed, fostering a sense of unity and resilience among the team. In addition to her on-the-ground support, Helen maintained clear and timely communication with the command room delivering critical updates on the challenges and successes observed on the wards. Her detailed and thoughtful reporting ensured that the command team had a clear picture of the situation.

Helen reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“It’s an honour that truly touches me. To be recognised for the support I gave to so many colleagues across my trust during a period of chaos—and knowing that I brought calm and made a difference—truly means so much. Especially in a digital role where the work can sometimes feel behind-the-scenes.

I’m passionate about using technology to improve access, safety, and outcomes for patients—especially through supporting colleagues with digital tools that make their work more efficient.
