Staff Nurse Joanna has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her colleagues and student nurses on her ward. She works at Glenfield Hospital and Cystic Fibrosis Specialist Nurse and colleague Darren Tature explains why Joanne deserves her award,
“Jo takes time to understand what her students want to achieve from their placement and will work out a plan with them. If a student is struggling she will do her best to find ways to support them, whether this be something as simple as regular catch ups or involving the educational support team to provide further support.
“Jo has used her own time to support students to be signed off if their last shift has fallen on her day off or she has been on annual leave, which to me shows dedication in part to making sure we have future nurses. Jo has always been approachable and will help any of her colleagues, whether they have asked or not. Her knowledge and experience give comfort and support to junior staff as she is someone that can answer any questions or concerns they may have with their patients, which allows them to feel secure that they are providing the best possible care for their patients.”
Joanna reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,
“I was completely overwhelmed at receiving such an award. I was left in complete shock that the work I try to do in ensuring that students feel supported is recognised. I am not very good at receiving awards or being the centre of attention, so I couldn’t really speak at the time as I found it too emotional.
“I just wanted to say that this would not have been possible if I didn’t get the support from my work colleagues. So for me, this award is for the whole of Ward 16 team at Glenfield.”
