Staff Nurse John Bleach from UHL Ashton Care Home has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for his colleagues. Deputy Sister and colleague Sarah Handley explains why John deserves his recognition.
“John has been instrumental in setting up UHL Ashton, from moving beds in the initial opening to supporting staff when patients becoming unwell. John is always supportive of other staff and assists junior staff when they are transferred to the unit. He makes himself available to other staff both pastorally and in times when patients are unwell and need sending back to hospital. He is a kind and caring nurse who goes above and beyond to communicate to both patients and their relatives when they become unwell.
“He treats all patients as if they are his relatives and had open communication willing to help all staff, although John is close to retirement you would not think this with his work ethic, thank you John for all you do.”
John reacted to winning his Cavell Star Award and reflected on his nursing career so far.
“This is my most treasured honour in my nursing career! I was absolutely delighted and touched to be recognised by my colleagues for going above and beyond.
It means so much to me and this award will carry me through the tough and sad days that we all face as health care professionals. I’m just so happy to receive it.
“My team are amazing, hard working, excellent professionals delivering first class care for our patients and I’m just so happy to be part of this team.
“Being a nurse and looking after patients at their most vulnerable times in their lives gives me so much satisfaction. Being that friendly face that gives them a smile and holds their hand and hopefully making a difference in their lives, whether it’s recovering from illness or being with them at the end of their life. After 25 years of nursing I still feel proud every time I put my uniform on.”
