Nurse and Clinical Practice Educator Raiza Mejares from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her colleagues.
Colleague and Practice Education Facilitator Marlon Simbajon explains why Raiza deserves her recognition.
“Raiza’s role provides the relevant and appropriate training for internationally educated nurses to successfully get their UK NMC registration. She demonstrates dedication in providing additional resources, be it time, training space or equipment just to make sure that each individual is well-equipped with the required knowledge, skills and behaviour to practice safely in the UK.
“Raiza always knows that what she’s doing now can positively influence how overseas nurses perform in clinical areas. She is also an advocate for career progression and has mentored many overseas nurses who’ve been successful in getting shortlisted, interviewed, and promoted to new roles.
“On top of this, Raiza leads on the Internationally Educated Nurses’ (IEN) Buddy Programme, which helps provide additional pastoral support to overseas nurses. Raiza’s empathy, kindness and compassion is greatly evident on how this project has been a success. She does not show signs of stopping as she is expanding her network collaborating with our Trust Professional Nurse Advocates (PNAs) and the multidisciplinary race and equality network.
“Raiza is a role-model, and an inspiration to many!”
Raiza reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“My heart is full, it was unexpected. I never actually thought of receiving recognition for the work I do. I would say this was not a one man team, I am part of a supportive team that helped me grow and discover new skills.
“My team provides me with the support I need during challenging moments. They are my family, they saw me during my joyous and my difficult times, and I have never felt intimidated to share my feelings. I am given opportunities to refocus and recommit to being the best version of myself for others.”
