Lead Acute Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner Ruth Robinson from University Hospitals of Leicester has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Clinical Nurse Specialist Allison Tucker explains why Ruth is such a worthy winner.
“Ruth consistently goes above and beyond in supporting patients and their families. As an acute oncology ANP, Ruth is often the person that is telling a patient or relative their diagnosis which she does with tremendous empathy and spends a considerable amount of time explaining next steps and coordinating onward care for each patient.
“Recently Ruth worked with a young woman with suspected cancer in very difficult circumstances. She coordinated this young lady’s care in a way that can only be truly admired, coordinating surgeons, maternity, radiology and the breast CNS team. Ruth worked with the patient’s family as an inpatient and ensured that she had a smooth discharge so that she did not struggle at home and gave an excellent handover to primary care in the community.
“Ruth is the kind of nurse that many healthcare professionals can only ever dream to be and certainly inspires me to be a better compassionate nurse.”
Ruth reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award.
“It was a huge shock, and honour to receive this award! I don’t see myself as a star, merely as someone who has been trusted to do a job, and support patients through the difficult times whilst helping ensure any care needs have been met. I feel very humbled that others see me as doing more than that! My team mean the world to me. We are a very small team, but working together we can make a big difference. Without the support of my team I would not be half the nurse I am today.”
