Senior Clinical Manager and nurse Steve Smith from NHS England, East of England Workforce, has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for his colleagues over his long career.
Colleague Debbie Cubitt explains why Steve is such a deserving winner.
“As Steve retires in August 2025, his legacy stands as a testament to a career defined by compassion, innovation, and unwavering dedication to others. I have had the privilege of working alongside Steve and witnessing firsthand his generosity in sharing knowledge, his commitment to excellence, and his tireless support for nursing colleagues. Steve has consistently gone above and beyond, often in his own time, to mentor others, supporting them to co-author publications, and foster a culture of learning and inquiry.
“Steve’s academic contributions are vast, with numerous journal articles published on neuroscience nursing, continence care, carer wellbeing, and quality of life. His work has influenced practice and policy both nationally and internationally. In turn, Steve has supported many nursing and AHP colleagues across the East of England in developing their own writing skills and practice with several articles now due for publication. His encouragement and belief in others’ potential have empowered many to find their voice and share their expertise.

Steve reacted to winning his award.
“I feel extremely honoured, humbled and grateful to be recognised by my amazing colleagues through this prestigious award. Edith Cavell was a pioneer in nurse education who epitomises courage, dedication and self sacrifice for those in need.
“Over the decades my nursing role has led me to engage with people faced with devastating, life changing news, and with their families. The way so many rise to challenges in often seemingly impossible circumstances is inspirational and makes it a great privilege to be involved in organising support and advocacy.
“My NHS England, East of England Workforce, Training and Education colleagues exemplify compassionate, inclusive teamworking. I am a better person and a better nurse for having the good fortune to work with them.”
