Sister Suet Wong, a Neonatal Nurse from George Eliot Hospital Special Care Baby Unit, has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients.
Colleague and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Caroline Wood explains why Suet deserves her award,
“2024 is an important year for Sister Suet Wong. She celebrates her 70th birthday and nearly 50 years of being a nurse! And all of these years of outstanding service she has spent at George Eliot Hospital.
“Sister Wong has cared for babies, who then had babies, and is now looking after their babies too! She’s well known and loved in Nuneaton by all 3 generations she has cared for. She will go out of her way to ensure families feel loved and supported on the unit, coming in every day to ensure that babies are ok and that families are able to talk to her when they want to.”
Suet reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award,
“I would like to thank all my colleagues past and present for making the last 47 years so incredibly enjoyable. And my sincere gratitude goes to all the families I had the pleasure of working with ensuring their babies were safe and grew into big, healthy adults.
“People often ask me what I enjoy most about my job? My answer is that its not just a job it’s a way of life, and my life is dedicated to the special care baby unit. Over time I have witnessed many changes within the NHS some good and some not, but one thing that has amazed me is the advancements in preterm mortality and disability.
“If I was to be given the choice to live my life as a neonatal nurse or on cruise ship seeing the world, I would still choose to be a neonatal nurse anytime!
“I feel very grateful to have had just a small part to play in these babies’ lives and from the bottom of my heart I thank you all and I am extremely grateful for the honour of this Cavell Star Award as I am near the end of my career.”
