Celebrating Toni

Healthcare assistant Toni Aranda Borreda from St Thomas’ Hospital has won a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for his patients. Colleague and staff nurse Desmond Curran explains why Toni is such a worthy winner,

“Toni creates such a positive atmosphere in theatre and gets to know each of his patients interests and varies his approach to care such as playing music they enjoy, distracting patients talking about interests and holding their hand whilst local is injected. He handles sensitive issues such as struggling trainees with the utmost respect and addresses the issues sensitively whilst ensuring no harm occurs to patients.

“Toni delivers patient centred care consistently and at high quality, he selflessly goes beyond for others often to his own detriment, all with enthusiasm and utmost pride in his work. Toni is highly commended in any reports on the service by all his patients, demonstrated in feedback and from colleagues. He is the epitome of what this award represents.”

Toni reacted to winning his Cavell Star Award,

“I was completely overwhelmed that I won and I can’t thank my colleagues enough for nominating me, I was so speechless. My team are like my second family, we work together cooperatively and we always support each other in order for us to deliver excellent service to our patients in the hand trauma department.

“I love the personal connection that I am able to make with patients. There was a time that I was running in the park and I heard someone calling my name loudly! He was one of my patients that I looked after, he had a fall while running and had surgery due to fracture. I think no matter how long it has been, a patient always remembers how they are treated well with compassion.”
