Throughout May, inspirational teams have baked a difference and raised more than £8,000, and counting, for nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants suffering serious hardship.

Over 170 teams signed up to get whisking, baking and cake-selling as part of the new #RaiseYourWhisks fundraising campaign celebrating International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses’ Day.

Those ‘baking’ part in the campaign included superstar nurses on wards across the UK, university departments, healthcare organisations and determined student nursing teams. The teams came together to host bake sales and stand with nursing friends facing difficulties.

The Emergency Assessment Unit team at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny Raised Their Whisks and hosted a party to celebrate International Nurses’ Day. Nurse Alison Swords from the team said:

“We thought it would be the ideal opportunity to raise money for such a good cause, we never can predict when any of us will face difficulties and require help and it’s great the Cavell Nurses’ Trust is there to help. For all I know, any one of my colleagues could be facing hardship. I may even require help at some point in my life. So by raising money, we can help colleagues and other nurses through difficult times.”

With every whisk raised and cake sold, bakers like Alison raised essential funds for nursing professionals facing severe difficulties in their lives.

Whilst recovering from serious illness which prevented her from working, nurse Chenesai faced rent arrears and an eviction notice from her home.

Chenesai Paramu“It really terrified me. I have a 13 year old daughter to support so what were we going to do? I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep will all of the worry. I felt so helpless” – Chenesai

Cavell Nurses’ Trust stepped in and ensured that Chenesai’s rent arrears were paid and the eviction notice was cancelled. This support was life-changing, and Chenesai has recently started a new permanent nursing job and is excited about the future.

Victoria Lewis, Fundraising Manager at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, said:

“We rely entirely on the kindness of our supporters to help ensure nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants get the vital aid they need in times of crisis. Each brilliant baker this May truly will transform lives, thank you so much to the #RaiseYourWhisks baking team.”

The campaign and special fundraising packs, including baking goodies, were made possible by baking experts Dr. Oetker and at home healthcare provider Healthcare at Home.

Don’t worry if you’ve missed out on #RaiseYourWhisks, you can stand with nursing professionals in hardship by getting involved with fundraising campaigns throughout the year.
