The Chief Nursing Officer for England, Ruth May, is asking staff to support colleagues facing personal and financial crisis to get behind the 10k For Nurses and Midwives campaign.

10k For Nurses and Midwives, run by charity Cavell Nurses’ Trust and in partnership with online nursing community @WeNurses, takes place throughout October and encourages fundraisers to complete a self-styled 10k challenge. Previous years have seen fundraisers walk 10,000 steps, run, hike or swim a 10k, sky-dive from 10,000ft, or take on a unique challenge for 10,000 seconds. More than 500 fundraisers have already signed up this year to lend their support.

Ruth May said,
“I very much encourage you to support Cavell Nurses’ Trust and get involved in 10k For Nurses and Midwives in this the Year of The Nurse and Midwife. Please join hundreds of nurses, midwives and many others by taking on your own ‘10k’ themed challenge and raising funds for a very worthy cause.”

The campaign, supported by Alexandra Workwear, Health Service Discounts, L&R, Thornbury Nursing Services & Scottish Nursing Guild, Vivup and Network Recruitment Wales, is in its fourth year and is on track to raise a record amount of money thanks to more fundraisers taking part than ever before.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust supports UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the impact of the coronavirus.

Since March, we’ve provided record levels of support. In July the amount of funding given out needed to be six times higher than that given in February, just before the pandemic hit the UK. The charity is supported entirely by voluntary contributions so campaigns like 10k For Nurses & Nurses provide vital funds for nursing and midwifery staff in times of crisis.

John Harrison, Fundraising Manager at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, explains:
“This year has been incredibly challenging in particular for nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants. Money raised through 10k For Nurses & Midwives will come at an incredibly crucial time with Cavell Nurses’ Trust facing record levels of applications for help this year. Money raised through this campaign will help meet this increased need right now, and also help to build the foundation for long-term support for these professions in the future. There is still time to sign up, so please visit the website and join the movement this October!”
