Breaking Barriers in Nursing and Midwifery: My Journey and Impact

Throughout my career in nursing and midwifery, I have been privileged to witness the power of compassionate care, strategic leadership, and advocacy in transforming healthcare. As a woman in this field—particularly as a Black woman—I have navigated unique challenges and opportunities that have shaped my commitment to improving patient and carer experiences, championing equality, and fostering leadership among aspiring professionals.

A Journey of Passion and Purpose

From my early days as a frontline nurse to stepping into executive and leadership roles within the NHS, my mission has always been clear: to enhance patient care while supporting the well-being of healthcare professionals. Each role I have undertaken—from direct patient care to influencing policy and strategy—has reinforced my belief in the value of strong leadership, quality improvement, and cultural transformation in healthcare.

One of my proudest achievements has been leading initiatives that promote inclusivity and professional development. Whether it was championing workforce equality, integrating mental health services, or spearheading programs that ensure every voice is heard, my driving force has always been the desire to create a healthcare system where everyone—regardless of background—feels valued and empowered.

Creating Meaningful Change

As a strategic leader, I have been fortunate to help shape policies, influence national healthcare strategies, and mentor future leaders. Through my work during COVID-19 with NHS England, the Chief Nursing Officer’s team, and various faith and health initiatives, I have seen firsthand how collaboration and advocacy can drive real, lasting change.

Some of the key areas where I have sought to make an impact include:

  • Equality & Inclusion: Organisationally challenging the status quo and sponsoring  initiatives such as the RCN Cultural Ambassador Program to reduce discriminatory practices and promote fairness in healthcare settings.
  • Quality Improvement: Implementing the Good to GreatContinuous Quality Improvement Strategy, leading to enhanced patient safety and a culture of organizational learning.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Coaching aspiring directors and mentoring nurses to nurture the next generation of healthcare leaders.
  • Community & Faith-Based Health Initiatives: Addressing health inequalities through faith-based collaborations, supporting maternal health, and developing mental health programs that reach underrepresented communities.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond clinical leadership, I am deeply passionate about inspiring others—particularly women—to step into leadership roles within and outside of healthcare. Through my work with women’s leadership and empowerment conferences, online Connect groups, and faith-based initiatives, I have sought to create spaces where women can connect, grow, and support one another.

I believe that nursing and midwifery are more than professions; they are platforms for advocacy, change, and empowerment. As I continue my journey, I remain committed to fostering a healthcare culture that values diversity, nurtures leadership, and prioritizes holistic patient care including recognising the spiritual needs of patients as integral to their care and recovery.

Final Thoughts

Being a Black woman in nursing and midwifery has given me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities within healthcare. I understand the barriers that still exist, but I also see the immense potential for transformation when we lead with integrity, champion inclusivity, and invest in the next generation.

To those just starting their journey in nursing and midwifery—know that your voice matters, your leadership is needed, and your ability to make a difference is limitless. Let’s continue to support and uplift one another as we shape the future of healthcare together.
