Jane’s story

Jane is a Senior University Lecturer and her fundraising challenge was to complete 130km via mountain bike. Unsure of what she wanted to be when she left school, Jane worked as a healthcare assistant in a nursing home whilst studying and this ignited a passion in Jane.”The care, compassion and companionship I saw was what inspired me at the age of 19 to start my nurse training.” Jane has had a varied career that has seen her working in acute neurosurgery, a community hospital setting and telephone triage.

Jane went above and beyond a 10k Challenge with her 130km mountain biking trip which saw her travel across the Brecon Beacons over two days.

The route gave her stunning views and sleeping outside allowed her to enjoy beautiful sunsets. She recalls how the dehydrated food was not a highlight but gave her the calories she needed to get through the incredible physical challenge.

“It was exhausting though it was most definitely worthwhile. I love a good challenge, which I knew this would be. It was a lot of riding each day and a lot of ascent, 3,300 metres across 2 days!”

Jane boosted her fundraising even further by hosting a bake sale and she was delighted with people’s generosity.

“There is a Latin quote”, explains Jane, “quis custodiet ipsos custodes, which asks ‘who guards the guards?’ I have always interpreted the guards in this as nurses. Nurses are there for their patients and colleagues but who is there to guard and protect them when they need it? This is where Cavell Nurses’ Trust steps in. Fundraising for them was a logical thing to do.”

“To anyone thinking of signing up I would say go for it! Challenge yourself, think outside the box when considering what to do, and most importantly enjoy it!”
